Quentin Crisp – A Life Of Beauty
Having just watched the ABC’s homage to Quentin Crisp “An Englishman In New York” I just wanted to say what a beautiful life he led. Born in a time when being a homosexual was illegal (I know that it still is in some places) Quentin or Denis Pratt as he was born lead his life with what seems to have been a singular purpose, to be nothing other than himself. I have to admit to not having read much about him but I have always been fascinated by this colourful and thoroughly individual character – I think that it must have been the Sting song that got me thinking:
“It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile”
Though my life and his are poles apart I can really relate to some of the things he said. To me, he was a true philosopher a :REAL person (in as much as he came across as true to himself at all times) and a spirit tuned to the frequency of intrigue.
I just LOVE these little pearls of wisdom:
“What is uniquely you? When you find it polish it and turn it into your style”
“Never try to keep up with the Jones, drag them down to your level it’s far cheaper”
“Fashion is what you adopt when you don’t know who you are”
AND
“The formula for achieving success in relationships is simple: you should treat all disasters as if they were trivialities but never treat a triviality as if it were a disaster.”
Let’s all live a life in style – whatever that may be!
