Sleeping your way to a great complexion? It’s a fair cop (per).

November 17, 2010

It might sound a bit dodgy but it is true,  forget (well, not completely) those potions, lotions, creams and washes, all you need for a beautiful face full of youthfulness is a good pillow.

About a month ago I was approached by a company called Cupron to look over their copper infused anti-bacterial and line-reducing  beauty pillowcases, socks, gloves and eye masks and I have to say I was really excited!  Having never tried anything like this before I was intrigued and told them to BRING IT ON and about a week later, the testing started.

So what AM I talking about?

US company Cupron has taken the world of high-performance textiles by storm with its copper infused technology to allow the production of woven, non-woven and knitted fabrics at a very reasonable price.  Copper is well-known for its broad-spectrum anti-microbial properties, a feature that was made use of well before anyone even knew that mini-bugs existed (copper and its alloy brass were used to carry water in ancient Greece and Egypt).   The metal has a very low toxicity both for humans and in the environment plus these copper-infused products can be used and washed time and time again without loosing efficacy.

So, for those looking for ‘green’ and sustainable cosmetics, a Cupron pillow is a must have item.

You may well be thinking that it all sounds interesting but can a metal pillow case be comfortable?  Well, the answer is YES.  The material and metal are woven or bound together during manufacturing so all you end up with is a  beautifully soft pillow slip that feels blissfully silky against the skin.

So now onto the good bit…… Does it work?  Well as I have mentioned before copper has a long history of being anti-microbial and this is due to its ability to penetrate microbes and mess around with their insides thus weakening and finally killing them off.  While the socks speak for themself (everyone has a tale to tell about smelly feet) translating this into benefits for skin care takes a little explaining.  It is all pretty logical really as any pimple causing bacteria sitting on the surface of the skin would be nuked by the copper woven into the pillow case just as long as the two things meet!   Bad bacteria on skin causes inflammation and redness which in turn puts the skin cells under stress and too much stress can age the skin prematurely.  So there seems no reason why these products shouldn’t make you look younger.

As you would expect Cupron have left nothing to chance and have carried out their own controlled trials with real people (instead of science geek fakes 😉 ) in order to back up the claims that they make.  Additionally their products and the supporting science have been extensively reviewed by industry and academic peers off the back of which have come orders from NASSA,  Defence Forces, Hospitals and even the miners that were recently trapped in Chile.

So what about my trial?  Well I have been sleeping on my pillow for about two weeks now and am yet to see any massive difference but then again I have thrown results slightly by taking a few days out on an international trip and then a weekend away sleeping in my car at a bike race (I know how to party).  So, what I want to do is to start again and document my progress with the pillow, eye mask, gloves and socks and share my results with you as I go.  While I am doing this I’ll share some more facts and info on these fascinating products.

Are you with me?   Of course you are and if it works – I’ll buy you a set to try yourself so how about that?

Watch this space (and my face) it’s all happening at Realize Beauty HQ.

This actually sounds pretty cool. I doubt the pillowcases would replace anything else I’m doing, but I might add them to “amp up” my other efforts. Two questions: any concerns about prolonged exposure to copper fibers? Are they available for sale in the U.S yet? Thanks for the info.

      Hi there,
I do believe that they can be bought in the USA – check on the Cupron website for details. On the concerns over exposure to copper fibers it should not be any more of a problem than any other household fibre should you breathe or ingest any (which is unlikely to happen in large doses). Copper is useful and essential for our bodies and should not cause problems. You are more likely to be exposed to copper through water pipes – something that we have done for thousands of years.

    Hi there,

I’m jumping into this conversation…hope it’s ok with you. I’m working at Cupron and just wanted to say that the skin-enhancement effect of the pillowcase is not actually related to the anti-microbial property of copper, but to another property of copper as an essential mineral in our body. Copper, in addition to being an effective anti-microbial, is one of the 11 essentials minerals to our body that also supports our skin system and we relate the effect of the pillowcase to this fact. If you want to read more about the science behind this (amazing…if I might say) product, we published the results of one of our clinical trials in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science and I’d love to send it to you. Look forward to reading more of how your field is going! 🙂 And yes, you can definitely buy one on our website…

Thanks for putting us straight, that’s really great to hear. So are you saying that the body absorbs copper while you sleep through the pillowcase? I got some more info from your UK office and will look up this report too.
      Thanks heaps

We don’t exactly know how it works, I’m told, but we know it works great. The UK office can send you one of the clinical studies so you can see for yourself…

Wow that is pretty fascinating stuff, would love if a good night’s sleep (on said pillowcase) could help cure my beauty woes 😀

You can go to the website Jade and take a look at the pdf’s on the clinical study reports. Also testimonials from some of our valued customers. There is one there too from a plastic surgeon in NY. Edwardians and Victorians, (the more affluent), used satin/silk pillowcases as they hydrated the skin and hair (as opposed to cotton which absorbs moisture). The Cupron pillowcases have the added bonus of the Cupron copper technology. Happy reading!

        Hi William,
The hydration story does make sense and for the record, my skin is looking better now in spite of many late nights and long, hot days here in Sydney. I’ll update the post and review the hydration info. Thanks.
