Shock Horror – Essential oils can be BAD for you!!!

September 11, 2015

So I read an article on a website last week and wanted to share with you my EXACT reactions to this wonderfully informative article.  Now I don’t want you to think that I’m hell bent on shaming the website or author or anything. I’m actually not.  What they have done is what most people these days tend to do.  They have a formulaic way of sharing information with you and me, the readers and that formula is often light on fact-checking or background context.  I am sure that this has more to do with time-frames and budgets than intellect or care but it is what it is, a piece of writing that doesn’t really tell us much at all. Only what these articles do achieve is to slowly drip, drip, drip information into our subconscious that we should BEWARE of everything. That even the things we hold dear – our natural ingredients so pure and gentle – can be evil.  We should be fearful of EVERYTHING and beware of anyone trying to ‘hide’ behind a nice sounding, all natural ingredient name.  What we are being pushed is paranoia.

So here is the article with my side notes.

  1. An OMG Headline.

Byrdie mag page 1

2. Raise the tension and tell us some pretty normal, common-sense stuff in a way that makes it sound amazingly interesting.

Byrdie page 2

3) Bolster your story with some anecdotal evidence because us humans are like so totally the same and what works for you works for me and them and them and them etc.  Who needs science and controlled experiments anyway and bias?  What’s bias? Byrdie page 4

And there you have it!

I hope you feel suitably informed.

he he… “Natural isn’t always good for you”. Some people better don’t go mushroom hunting. This is very similar to “I am a vegetarian, but I keep gaining weight. Why?”

The world has gone crazy or maybe it was always crazy. Who knows….
