About Realize Beauty – The Blog

Realize Beauty came into being one balmy evening in February 2008. I had left the corporate cosmetics world two months before and had been playing with ideas relating to my feelings towards the beauty industry and the term ‘natural’ and how that related to cosmetic products and science. I wanted to share my passion for the scientific side of beauty with people and explore its depth.

My mission started to take shape and so did my writing. My ‘science journalism’ blog soon became a place to explore ideas, to educate and entertain!   As a scientist and writer I have always believed that my job is less about preaching (being) and more about teaching (exploring/ doing).  Over the years the blog has become an invaluable platform from which to stimulate open and honest dialogue. It has allowed me to model the process of  scientific thinking, a practice where conceptions, ideas and ‘truths’ are probed, interrogated and sometimes challenged systematically and without prejudice.  It has also been a great place from which to encourage practical experimentation and deeper study. Mostly it has developed into a playground for those who prefer to dive in deep and scratch around, for the explorers, the truth seekers, the inventors and the artists.

Today Realize Beauty is a successful consulting company focused on science communication, product development and testing, teaching and the creation of science-based content for sales and marketing.

You have got great content here! I look forward to looking around. My “day job” is with a major beauty company, but I am not biased completely! I like to see the results from other companies as well. My blog is “not” about the beauty industry, but women’s lives and issues, come for a visit!

This blog–by a CHEMIST, not a teenager– is exactly the kind of thing that beauty consumers need to make informed decisions in their product usage. I was very impressed with the intelligent but elegantly simple way you broke down the research findings about cyclopentasiloxane and silicones in general. As a medical student and former biochemistry student in undergrad, I love foraging for and reviewing the research about the ingredients in my cosmetics and searching for safer alternatives, but have found tons of misinformation on the internet from folks who seek to explain the different chemicals but don’t have the proper background. Hats off to you for the wonderful service you provide for beauty consumers everywhere!

I just put you in my reader! We have similar visions, although, I adore my slow cookers and have many sizes. I can heat and hold all the water I need in one day and have it ready when I want to, in a sanitized vessel, transfer it and add the goodies that need to go with it, before I mix emulsions. Three settings is the key. Of course I have children. They are not allowed in the formulary, but sometimes they actually want me to, GASP!!!! feed them!!! hehe.

Really interesting stuff you have on here. I am now currently following this blog. As someone who has recently stepped foot in the beauty industry, I am constantly trying to find the middle ground between the effectiveness of science and the wisdom of nature. I’m not a chemist or a scientist, so I’ve been looking for informative sources that will be easy for the average person to understand. This is the kind of informative unbiased viewpoint that I’ve been looking for. Cheers!

      Hi Kareen,
Thank you so much for those kind words. I do my best to sum up the science as it currently stands but urge everyone to do their own thinking before deciding what is best for them. There is a lot of mis-information out there and a lot of preaching, neither of which I’m a fan of. I hope that you continue to enjoy the blog.

Well thanks for that Maryanne and welcome along!

  27. June 27, 2014 4:29 pm

Thanks Amanda…..I have always had a secret desire to “do” a little skin care range. Having worked for a long time with high quality, effective, results driven (& very expensive European cosmetics).
I know what I like to feel, smell & find, in a skincare product. And know within the very first application onto a skin, if it worthy or not.

Back in the day( late 70s,mid 80’s), Hungarian pharamcist Ella Bache had an extrodinary range. Just delivered results all the way, within days of using her potions !. Her Creme Tomate, Creme Allantion, Herbal Creme, & her dynamic Masque Sanquin. All extrodinary !

I would love to put together a small range of 6 products to a high standard. Not something that just smells nice & is ‘fluffy’ to use. To put together something that “works”, & has the “wow” factor. To work along side someone that can help me understand more about pharmacuticals & its relationship with skin. Are you my girl ? 😉

      Hi Maryanne,
Well who knows. Creating custom formulations is a big part of what we do here at Realize Beauty so we might be able to do something. Send me an email on my amanda@realizebeauty.com account and we can go from there. A range of 6 products will be quite expensive but just like Ella Bache, I’m sure you will find the investment worth while.

Not sure about your phone but when I view it on mine there is a search bar you can use to type in keywords to search. I’m not sure beyond that.
